Hungarian licence plates to change from July
From 1 July, Hungarian licence plates will change. The reason is simply that there are no more characters left. From 1 July, newly issued Hungarian licence plates will be extended by one letter, the State Secretary for Transport of the Ministry of Technology and Industry said on Wednesday on his social media site.
The official signs already in circulation do not need to be replaced with new ones, they can continue to be used, Dávid Vitézy pointed out. The longer number plates will be replaced in a gradual, ascending order as the vehicle fleet is gradually renewed.

The measure will not force anyone to make unnecessary inquiries or to deal with more paperwork, he underscored.
The new type of number plates will consist of two vowels or consonants of the Latin alphabet, followed by two letters and three digits. The plates cannot contain accented vowels or digraphs other than dz. On the plates, next to the coat of arms of Hungary, there are twelve yellow stars with a white H in a blue field representing the European flag,”
Vitézy said.
He added that signs in light green for green vehicles and grey for bicycle transport equipment will also be available in the longer format.
Dávid Vitézy said that the temporary number plates will be simplified, and from now on they will be issued with the uniform letter I. In the future,
taxis will be able to use TX plates, Hungarian Defence Forces vehicles HA, police vehicles RA, National Ambulance Service vehicles MA, National Tax and Customs Administration vehicles NA and prison service vehicles BA.

Eleonora, here we go again, “here is how”. No doubt later there will be a ‘this is how’ attached to some other article. In this particular instance, the “here is how” is totally superfluous. Were it me, I would write ‘Hungarian licence plates are set to change from July’. That is quite sufficient. I would only ever use ‘here is how’ when advising someone how to do something.
Thanks Lexicon, noted. We’ve changed the title.
